Where to Stay in Busan for a Gyeongju Day Trip: Skip Downtown, Go to Haeundae

Where to stay in Busan for a Gyeongju day trip: the short version

  • Stay in Haeundae. A direct intercity bus runs between Haeundae and Gyeongju — you never have to route through central Busan.
  • The bus: about 1 hour 10 minutes, roughly 10,500 won, hourly from around 07:00 to 21:00.
  • Where it stops: about a 2-minute walk from Haeundae Station (Line 2, Exit 2), in the same neighbourhood as the beach.
  • Budget picks: Toyoko Inn Busan Haeundae 2 or Ibis Ambassador Busan Haeundae, both near the sand.

Most advice about visiting Gyeongju from Busan assumes you are staying near Busan Station or will pass through the Nopo bus terminal. That is true if you are downtown. It is not true if you are staying in Haeundae, Busan’s beach district and one of its most popular places to base yourself — there is a direct bus from there too, and it skips the city centre entirely.

I live in Gyeongju and go to Busan often on exactly this route. This guide covers the bus, where it actually leaves from, and the two budget hotels near the beach I use myself. For the Gyeongju side of the day — what to see and in what order — see our Gyeongju day trip from Busan guide.

The direct bus: Haeundae to Gyeongju

An intercity bus runs straight between the Gyeongju Intercity Bus Terminal and a stop in Haeundae, operated by a rotation of regional companies (Haeundae Express, Geuma Travel, Aseong Express and Cheonma Express). No transfer, no trip through downtown Busan first.

Schedule from route information current as of September 2026. Bus timetables shift, so confirm the day’s departures at the terminal or with the operator before you plan around a specific time.

A local’s note. This is the route I actually use. Nopo and Busan Station both work if you’re downtown, but if your hotel is in Haeundae, there’s no reason to go anywhere near the city centre first — the bus stop is a five-minute walk from your hotel either way.

Comparing terminals? See which Busan terminal to use. Once you arrive at the Gyeongju terminal, the day runs exactly like any other Gyeongju day trip: temples in the morning, the royal tombs and Hwangnidan-gil in the afternoon, Wolji Pond at dusk. Our full day-trip itinerary covers it hour by hour — just swap the Nopo bus for the Haeundae one.

Where to stay in Haeundae

Haeundae Beach is Busan’s best-known stretch of sand, and the neighbourhood around it has hotels for every budget. For a Gyeongju day trip you don’t need a beachfront resort — you need somewhere affordable, clean, and close to both the beach and the bus stop. Two chains cover that well.

Toyoko Inn Busan Haeundae 2 Ibis Ambassador Busan Haeundae
Style Japanese budget business hotel chain — small, efficient rooms Budget-midscale international chain, a step up in room size
To the beach A short walk About 1 minute
To Haeundae Station About 10 minutes on foot About 5 minutes to Haeundae Beach or Dongbaek Station
Best for The lowest price near the beach A little more room, still affordable for the location

A local’s note. These are the two I actually book — cheap, reliable, and close enough to the beach and the bus stop that I never think twice about logistics. Neither is fancy, and that’s the point: you’re paying for location, not a lobby.

Haeundae Market, before or after your bus

Haeundae Traditional Market sits between the beach and Haeundae Station, an easy stop on the way to or from the bus.

A local’s note. The tteokbokki and the raw fish (hoe) from the market’s seafood stalls are what I go back for. It’s not a tourist photo-op stop for me — it’s just where I eat when I’m in the neighbourhood.

The market is also known more broadly for its seed hotteok stalls, which draw long queues on weekends — worth a look even if you don’t wait in line.

Haeundae or downtown: which should you pick?

Haeundae suits you if the beach itself is part of the trip, or if a direct bus with no transfer matters more than shaving minutes off the ride. Downtown Busan, near Busan Station or the Nopo terminal, suits you better if you want the fastest KTX connection, or if central Busan neighbourhoods like Gwangbokdong are also on your list — for that side of the comparison see our guide to staying near Busan Station and Nampo-dong.

Frequently asked questions

Is there really a direct bus from Haeundae to Gyeongju?

Yes. It runs about hourly in both directions, roughly 1 hour 10 minutes each way, without going through central Busan.

Do I need to go to Nopo or Busan Station first if I’m staying in Haeundae?

No. The Haeundae stop is separate and just as direct. Nopo and Busan Station matter only if that’s where you’re actually staying.

Where exactly does the Haeundae bus leave from?

A stop about five minutes on foot from Haeundae Station (Line 2), Exit 2 — in the same area as the beach and the market.

Toyoko Inn or Ibis Ambassador — which is better for this trip?

Both work well. Toyoko Inn is the cheaper of the two; Ibis Ambassador is a short step up in room size and is closer again to the beach. Either puts you within easy reach of the bus stop.

Can I do the whole Gyeongju day trip from Haeundae in a day?

Yes, on the same schedule as from downtown Busan. Take an early bus, follow our Gyeongju day-trip itinerary, and catch one of the evening buses back.

Conclusion

If Haeundae is where you’re staying in Busan, you don’t need to plan your Gyeongju day around getting into the city centre first. A direct bus connects the two, budget hotels sit steps from the beach and the bus stop, and the market covers breakfast or dinner either way.
